Many readers see Romeo and Juliet not as two separate characters, but as a whole, because together they represent the idea of love stronger than death. However, Shakespeare makes both young lovers individual characters. Romeo is ruled by emotion, he acts on impulse and is subject to extremities. Juliet is more reasonable, responsible, more adult.
Two factors are of primary importance in the tragic turn of the plot:
1) the old inertia of the feud contaminating the atmosphere of city;
2) the fate itself, because all the characters are thwarted by fatal chance.
