Star-Trek is the most American cultural product of our time. Even the showrunners themselves seldom realize how American the entire concept is.
The federation is a glorified, in space elevated United States. The idea of people from different backgrounds working together reflects the working consensus of the United States. The first series, with Mr. Spock, Bones, and Kirk, explores a lot of different American topics, such as »planet girls«. Clearly an allusion to the Wild West practice of buying wives, either from Native people or overseas.
The values of Star-Trek are often simply those of blue (democratic) America, or a slightly idealized version of them.
