The concept of empathy is problematic in its assumption that what one person feels is the same as another's feeling. What I may interpret as an empathetic response may be, in fact, simply a sympathetic response. In and of itself, this is a neutral response; the complications arise after the initial response, when people's assumptions color their post-event actions.
