So far, I'm baffled by the midlife crisis. I am nearly sixty, and I've never had one. Or maybe I went through it in my thirties. Or maybe I'm still in a dilly that has lasted twenty-five years. Or maybe I was so engaged that I didn't notice it when it occurred. Or maybe – any day now – I'm in for the rudest awakening of my life. Good grief, what am I supposed to metamorphose into this time? Keep listening for the scream....

Middle age is like the Middle Ages. If you actually lived at the time, you would never have noticed how middling was the age through which you made your way. Anyway, we rarely change by very much and probably can't wait to get into that old age where we can be as opinionated, rude and controlling as we wish, with no-one to tell us off from above or below....

I refuse to have a midlife crisis because I refuse to commit to a definite end date!

Three nice things about growing older:

1. There isn't anything left to learn the hard way;

2. In a hostage situation, you're the first to be released;

3. It's harder to make sexual harrassment charges stick.

We don't know when the end will be, so how is it possible to define the borders of our midlife?
