Belief is a hellmark of higher consciousness. It means you build a mental represetation of the reality and this representation can be compared with the actual thing, the »actuality«.
Other specimen of the kingdom of life lacks this ability, e.g. for a plant, there is no mental space, most insects or fishes probably doesn't think about how the world is.
A computer, for instance, lacks this, too.
With belief comes the possibility of being false.
Therefore, thinkers develop the concepts of »knowledge« or »recognition« in order to distinguish between beliefs that have some evidence supporting them and those that lack such evidence.
