Communism is the dream; State Totalitarianism is the reality. The first Christians in the 1st century A.D. were communists after a fashion and small homogenic groupings of people (usually religious in nature) have functioned throughout history with a democratic/communist political/ economic structure, but no large nation (despite propaganda to the contrary) has yet to successfully pull it off.
