Edward Lear wrote about an owl and a pussycat going to sea in a pea-green boat.

An odd relationship, this bird and quadriped? Not really.

Both are nocturnal hunters, both move with amazing silence and impressive stealth, and eat relatively the same diet.

Owls and cats are kindred spirits, cousins if not siblings on the evolutional pyramid.

When I was a little girl, we found three abandoned kittens by the drainpipe in the alley next to the apartment building. It was a cold, rainy day and the kittens were soaked. My mother sent me upstairs to get some towels and we brought the kittens inside and dried them off.

Because of where we found them, we named them: Itsy, Bitsy and Spider.

Itsy and Bitsy were females. They were black with white paws. Itsy had a taller white »sock« on her left front leg.

Spider was a male. He was black with a white spot just to the left of his nose.

I was six then. Spider ran away when I was seven. We gave Bitsy to my cousin Angela who lived in an apartment down the block. But Itsy was my cat until I was fifteen. She died one night lying on the rug next to my bed.

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle.
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

The orange cat was lying on the driveway in a half-circle, tail patting the ground in satisfaction. Summer sun warmed the small beast, and as I neared him, I noticed that one of his eyes was hurt. It was clouded over, as happens with glaucoma, and he had several scars about his face and ears – he had fought many fights in this cat-life. »Meow!« was his insistent cry to be loved and petted, and he quickly became my best friend. I named this creature »One-Eyed Jack« – a name conceived of him looking like he was a cat named Jack, and because he had only one good eye. I wanted to make him a little eyepatch so he would look like a little cat-pirate. Alas, I moved away and was unable to take him with me, and I miss him greatly. We both had visible scars, we both had fought hard for our lives and won. I only hope that when I visit that old house that I can find him wandering the neighborhood. I will scoop my kitty up into my arms and kiss his nose, and keep him by my side until death do us part.

If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happen if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it?

Tuck and Bishop are two cats who live in a 650 square-foot cabin with two dogs, a bird, five fancy goldfish, and a woman with a head on her shoulders, art in her hands, and eyes that look out straight at the world.
